12: Virtual Centre

Outlines of previous work modules have highlighted the importance of taking a highly co-ordinated approach to the identification of data needs, methodologies for data collection and the provisions for feeding data into subsequent research.

To achieve this, one of the core elements of the overall research programme is the creation of a `virtual centre` which acts as a repository and clearing-house for databases, statistical sources, research results and discussion documents relevant to sustainable logistics. The growth in the amount of research being undertaken in this field and its wide dispersal both geographically and by discipline is making it increasingly difficult to keep track of new developments and data sources.

The virtual centre provides a valuable service to the wider research community by creating searchable databases on all the main aspects of green logistics. This is available online to registered users. Information is gathered regularly from various published sources including government statistics and reports, academic and professional journals, trade publications and websites, books, consultancy reports and conference proceedings. Key researchers in the field, with whom we are extensively networked around the world, will be invited to submit details of their research results to ensure that the database is kept as comprehensive and up-to-date as possible.

The virtual centre also performs other important roles. For example, it acts as the main interface between the research consortium and interested parties in academic, business and governmental circles. It facilitates networking between members of the research consortium. It highlights organised workshops (on a 6-monthly cycle) on a range of green logistics issues. It manages the dissemination of research output from the programme, and establishes and maintains the website for the research programme.

Heriot-Watt play a lead role in establishing and running the centre. All partners make contributions based on their particular specialisms and the work they undertake in the various work modules. The aim would be to make this Centre self-financing over the four years of the research programme. Revenue to ensure its longer term viability will be raised through sponsorship and the provision of workshops.
